LILITH & THE GARDEN OF EDEN
afrikaBurn . 2014
Daya Heller’s monumental installation vividly reimagines the story of Lilith, a powerful symbol of female empowerment, sexual liberation, and defiance against patriarchy. Banished from Eden for her refusal to submit to Adam, Lilith looms over a garden filled with oversized, fantastical plants, their exotic and erotic forms representing fertility, life, and the interplay of the sexes. Opposite her, Adam and Eve stand before a giant ouroboros—a mythical serpent embodying unity and the eternal cycle of life, death, and rebirth. Crafted from steel and paper, these breathtaking sculptures spark dialogue and creativity, capturing the intricate balance of freedom, resistance, power, and vulnerability.
