DANCE OF THE LA GUMAS
artscape theatre centre & district six museum . artscape arena . 2022
This dance masterpiece tells the story of Blanche and Alex La Guma, a couple who dedicated their lives to the liberation of oppressed South Africans, even while in exile. Like many South African artists, musicians, poets, and writers, the La Gumas were arrested and exiled as their creative works began raising awareness and garnering international support for the anti-apartheid movement. The production traces their journey, from their youthful romance in District Six to their underground activities with the Communist Party and Alex's involvement in the Treason Trial. It also delves into the pain of exile, the unfamiliarity of life in London, and their eventual diplomatic posting in Cuba. This captivating narrative weaves together a powerful love story with themes of dance, poetry, brutal torture, and global adventure, all presented with striking depth and elegance.
